Shopify admin now suggests and autocompletes GTIN barcodes

Barcodes rarely get attention until something goes wrong, usually when a product is rejected or mismatched in a sales channel. On 29 October 2026 Shopify added suggestions and autocomplete for GTINs in the admin, designed to help your barcode data be correct and consistent. It is a small change on the surface, but it touches product data that sales channels depend on.

What it is

A GTIN is a globally unique number tied to most retail barcodes. Sales channels such as Google use it to match your listings to the correct product. Shopify's admin now helps you enter and label these numbers correctly by checking them against the GS1 registry.

How it works and how to access it

The changelog describes four behaviours.

  • Autocomplete: when you enter a barcode that looks like a GTIN, Shopify checks the GS1 registry. If GS1 has it registered, Shopify sets the barcode type to GTIN and highlights the change.
  • Suggestions: saved barcodes of type Custom that look like GTINs show a suggestion. You can accept it to switch the type to GTIN, or dismiss it.
  • Registry comparison: if GS1 lists a barcode under a product, you can hover over it to compare your vendor and product name with GS1's record. This is informational only.
  • Bulk actions: in the products and inventory bulk editors, you can accept or dismiss all GTIN suggestions at once.

The entry does not name any setup steps, so these checks appear in the admin as you work.

Limits and caveats

Shopify is clear that these are checks, not rules. Nothing blocks you from saving, and Shopify does not change a saved barcode unless you accept a suggestion. You can still choose any barcode type, including Custom for internal codes. Suggestions, autocomplete and registry warnings do not affect your products if you ignore them. You also do not need to edit your title, vendor or description to match the GS1 record.

The changelog does not specify which plans or regions have access, or any usage limits. It also relates only to what GS1 holds, so a barcode that is valid for your business but not registered there will not be autocompleted.

What it means for merchants

If you sell through Google or other channels that match products by GTIN, the barcode type on your products matters. A GTIN stored as a Custom barcode may not be recognised as a GTIN where you want it to be. The suggestions give you a quick way to find and fix those, particularly in the bulk editors, where you can accept all suggestions in one step.

Care is still needed. Switching a barcode type is a change to your product data, and accepting every suggestion in bulk should follow a check that the barcodes really are GTINs and not internal codes that happen to look like one. Brands that use their own internal numbering for styles and sizes should be especially careful, since Shopify still lets you keep those as Custom.

What it means for agencies and partners

Barcode quality is a common root cause when product feeds are disapproved or listings are matched to the wrong product, so this is a useful tool for audits. You can use the suggestions to spot Custom barcodes that should be GTINs, and the registry comparison to sanity check records. Be careful with bulk accept on client catalogues without agreeing the scope first, and keep a record of what you changed. The comparison with GS1 is informational, so do not rewrite client titles or vendor names to match it.

How we would approach it

  1. Export or review your current barcodes and note which are real GTINs and which are internal codes.
  2. Open the products and inventory bulk editors and look at the GTIN suggestions Shopify shows.
  3. Accept suggestions only where you have confirmed the barcode is a genuine GTIN, and dismiss the rest.
  4. Use the registry comparison on a sample of products to check for obvious mismatches with GS1's record, without rewriting your own titles to match.
  5. Re-check your product feeds in your sales channels after the changes, and add a barcode check to your new product checklist.

The short version

Shopify admin now autocompletes registered GTINs, suggests switching Custom barcodes that look like GTINs, lets you compare against GS1's record and offers bulk accept or dismiss. Nothing is forced, and you can keep Custom for internal codes. Use it to tidy product data that sales channels rely on, but confirm what is a real GTIN before you accept in bulk.
