Shopify Knowledge base moves into the admin

Shopify has built Knowledge base into the admin. On 26 October 2026 the Shopify Changelog announced that it now sits at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base and replaces the standalone Knowledge Base app, which will no longer be available after 15 January 2027. It is the place where a merchant controls the facts that AI agents use about their store, and for brands that care about how they appear in AI-led shopping, it is worth setting aside time to review.

What it is

Knowledge base is a single page for reviewing, editing and publishing the facts AI agents use about your store. Shopify's examples include contact details and gift services. Shopify drafts these facts from your published storefront pages, and each fact links back to the page it came from, so you can see where it originated and check it against the source.

The key control is publishing. As Shopify puts it, nothing Shopify drafted reaches AI agents until you publish it. The drafts are a starting point for you to check, not something that goes live by default.

How to access it

It is available now in the Shopify admin at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. If you did not use the old app, no action is required. Facts are drafted from your storefront and stay unpublished until you publish them.

If you did use the Knowledge Base app, what happens next depends on how many facts you had.

Limits and caveats

The migration split is the part to read carefully:

  • Fewer than 1,000 facts: the facts you wrote or edited moved over and were published, so AI agents can keep using them. You can unpublish any fact at any time, and no action is required.
  • More than 1,000 facts: Knowledge base holds up to 1,000 additional facts, and your facts did not move over. You need to add the ones you want to keep before 15 January 2027. Shopify emailed these stores directly.

Note that for the first group, migrated facts were published automatically. That is convenient, but it means content you wrote some time ago is now live in the new location, so a review is sensible even though none is required.

What it means for merchants

AI agents increasingly answer questions about stores, and they need facts to do it. Knowledge base gives you a direct way to make sure those facts are accurate and are the ones you want repeated. For a fashion or sportswear brand, that might be practical details such as how to contact you or whether you offer gift services, which are the examples Shopify gives.

Because every drafted fact links to its source page, the page also doubles as a prompt to audit your storefront content. If a drafted fact looks wrong, the cause may be an out-of-date page, and fixing the page is the right answer.

What it means for agencies and partners

There is a clear deadline and a clear audit task here. Any client who used the standalone app should be checked, and anyone with more than 1,000 facts needs to be handled before 15 January 2027 because their facts did not migrate. Shopify emailed those stores, but the email may have gone to someone other than the person you work with, so it is worth asking.

It also opens a conversation about governance. Someone at the client needs to own what AI agents are told about the brand, including who reviews drafts and who approves publishing. That is a natural extension of content and merchandising support.

How we would approach it

  1. Find out which clients used the standalone Knowledge Base app, and roughly how many facts each had.
  2. For clients with more than 1,000 facts, list the facts worth keeping and add them well before 15 January 2027.
  3. For migrated clients, review the facts that were published automatically and unpublish anything that is out of date.
  4. For clients who never used the app, review the drafted facts against their source pages and publish only what is correct.
  5. Agree an owner and a review rhythm so the knowledge base stays accurate as the store changes.

The short version

Knowledge base is now in the Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic and replaces the standalone app, which ends after 15 January 2027. Shopify drafts facts from your storefront, and nothing reaches AI agents until you publish it. Stores with fewer than 1,000 facts were migrated and published automatically. Stores with more than 1,000 need to add the facts they want to keep before the deadline. Review what is live, fix the source pages and decide who owns it.
