Shopify Translate & Adapt now auto-syncs translations for up to 8 languages

Keeping a multilingual store current has always been a slog. Someone edits a product description, and then someone else has to remember to re-translate it. Shopify has now removed much of that chore from Translate & Adapt for merchants in the UK and Europe. Auto-sync keeps translations up to date on a weekly cycle, and the number of languages Shopify can translate for you has risen from 2 to 8.
What it is
Translate & Adapt is Shopify's app for translating store content. The latest update, announced in the Shopify Changelog on 9 October 2026, adds an Auto-sync option. When it is switched on for a published language, Shopify translates new and updated store content each week. Editing a product description or other content no longer means translating it again by hand in the app.
Three other details matter:
- The language limit for Shopify-provided translation rises from 2 to 8.
- Translations written by hand are never overwritten by automatic ones.
- The "Auto-translate" button is now called "Translate now". It translates content immediately rather than waiting for the next weekly sync.
How it works and how to access it
Setup takes a minute. Open Translate & Adapt, select a published language, and turn on Auto-sync with the toggle. It is off by default, and it can be turned on or off for each language at any time, so you can roll it out one market at a time.
Shopify lists the update as applying to merchants in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The changelog describes these as EU merchants, even though Switzerland and the UK are not EU members. The entry does not mention plans or pricing.
Limits and caveats
The main limit is the slot count. Each language that uses Auto-sync, Translate now, or both counts as one of your 8 language slots. If you plan to sell in more than 8 languages, you will still need another route for the rest.
The sync is weekly, not instant. If you launch a campaign or change a price message and need the translated version live today, Translate now is the tool for that moment. Shopify's help documentation on automatic translation is the place to check finer points before you rely on it.
What it means for merchants
For brands selling across several European markets, the benefit is less drift between languages. New products and edited copy follow through to each language without anyone raising a ticket. Because hand-written translations are protected, you can keep human-edited copy on hero pages and let automation cover the long tail of products and supporting content.
The jump from 2 to 8 languages also lowers the barrier to testing a new market. Switching a language on is a toggle rather than a project.
What it means for agencies and partners
Agencies that manage multilingual builds can simplify their handover. Ongoing translation upkeep, often a hidden maintenance cost, becomes a setting rather than a recurring task. That frees time for the work that needs judgement, such as tone of voice, sizing language and legal copy.
It also raises a governance question. Someone should decide which languages are fully automated and which keep a human review step, and the client should know where the line sits. Auto-sync does not replace a review process for high-stakes content.
How we would approach it
- List every published language and rank markets by revenue and by risk if the copy is wrong.
- Choose up to 8 languages that will use Shopify's translation, remembering that Translate now also uses a slot.
- Hand-write or manually edit the pages that matter most, such as the homepage, key collections and policies, so automation never overrides them.
- Turn on Auto-sync for one lower-risk language first and review the output after the first weekly run.
- Roll out to the remaining languages and add a periodic spot check to the store's maintenance routine.
The short version
Translate & Adapt can now translate new and updated content automatically each week, for up to 8 languages instead of 2. Auto-sync is off by default and is switched on per language. Manual translations are never overwritten, and "Auto-translate" is now "Translate now". It applies to merchants in the UK and a list of European countries, and every language using either feature takes one of the 8 slots.
