Map product data by sales channel

Shopify has added a channel mapping page that lets you manage and optimise the product data sent to each of your sales channels. For brands that sell through marketplaces, social shops and ad feeds as well as their own website, the quality of product data decides how products look and whether they appear at all. This update, announced on 28 October, gives you much more control over that data, channel by channel.

What it is

The new page shows the product data each channel receives, and lets you preview it. Fields such as titles, images, product category and colour have default sources. You can now change which of your fields each channel field pulls from, and the change applies to every product on that channel.

How it works and how to access it

Shopify lists several controls:

  • Map per channel: change which source field feeds each channel field, with the change applying to every product on that channel.
  • Combine fields: let a field draw on more than one source, for example adding your brand name to the product title.
  • Change a source field: point a default at a different field.
  • Customise by channel: override any field for a specific product on a specific channel.
  • Bulk edit: update channel values for many products and variants at once.
  • Coverage: each field shows a coverage percentage, helping you find and fill missing values.

Shopify has also published a help document on channel mapping with more detail.

Limits and caveats

The announcement does not state rollout timing, eligible plans, regions or usage limits, and it does not list which channels support mapping. Check the help document and your own admin to see what is available for your store. Changes made at channel level apply to every product on that channel, so a mistake in a mapping can spread quickly. Preview the result before relying on it.

What it means for merchants

Different channels want different things from the same product. A title that works on your own site may be too long, too brand-heavy or too vague for an ad feed or marketplace listing. Until now, fixing that often meant duplicating data, relying on a feed app, or accepting a compromise. A mapping page in the admin offers a cleaner way to shape what each channel sees without changing the product itself.

For fashion, streetwear and sportswear brands the fields that matter most are usually title, colour, category and images. Clear colour and category data helps shoppers filter and helps channels place your products correctly. The coverage percentage is useful for catalogue health: a low figure on colour or category tells you exactly where listings are incomplete.

What it means for agencies and partners

Agencies that run feeds and marketplace listings should look at whether this replaces some feed rules or app settings, and where it works alongside them. It is worth auditing coverage across the catalogue, agreeing naming rules for titles per channel, and using bulk edit to fix gaps in variants. Documenting each mapping decision will also help the next person who works on the account understand why a channel shows what it does.

How we would approach it

  1. Open the channel mapping page and preview what each channel currently receives.
  2. Review the coverage percentages and list the fields with the biggest gaps, starting with colour, category and images.
  3. Fill missing values in bulk where you can, at product and variant level.
  4. Adjust title mapping for one channel first, for example adding the brand name, and check the preview.
  5. Watch listing quality and approvals on that channel before rolling the same approach out to others.

The short version

Shopify's new channel mapping page lets you preview, remap, combine and bulk edit the product data each sales channel receives, with coverage percentages to show what is missing. It does not state plan or region limits, so check your admin. Use it to fix incomplete data and tailor titles per channel, but test each change because mappings apply to every product on the channel.
